Transparent windows not being captured (FIXED)
|
|
|
|
|
|
TimeSnapper will not capture anything that has the slightest transparency. I have a number of programs that have reduced opacity settings, and these are never recorded by Timesnapper. Timesnapper takes the capture but there is no sign of these programs running. I have TimeSnapper set to take snapshots every 30 seconds, it runs 24.7. I record everything I do on the computer (the screenshots are sent onto someone else for viewing) and any of the programs I use whose windows aren't 100% visable are not recorded, I really need to capture EVERYTHING on my computer, as a true representation of the work I do. Kind of hard when some of the programs I use are being ignored. This isn't filter issue, as I said, the captures are taken but they don't show those windows which aren't 100% visable.
Can this be fixed?
Thanks
~Wabbit

I downloaded and installed the new version and it still doesn't capture anything that isn't 100% visiable :(

Hi Wabbit,
are you running the v. 2.6.1 version for sure? I've just retested this and TimeSnapper does indeed capture all semi-transparent window (no matter how much transparency).
If you are running the latest version, can you tell:
- what operating system you are using
- are you capturing the active application or the whole screen (which one?)
- what programs do you have that are transparant.
Thanks Atli

The About box says, Version 2.6.1.0
- My OS is WinXP Pro
- I capture the entire screen, "All Screens" is what I have it set to in the Options (I have two monitors)
Programs are as follows that it will not capture or ignores the transparent parts.
- Object Bar (Ignores completly)
- TheBat!: The Mail ticker, it captures everyting but the Mail Ticker which is at 80% Opacity.
- DU Meter: It completely ignores the traffic window, which is 20% transparent.
- Microsoft Calculator Plus (Ignores Completely even if not transparent.)
- WindowsBlinds (Don't use this often but sometimes I do and it's a mess, broken windows in the captures)
- WinAMP
Regards,
~Wabbit

Wabbit,
thanks for the detailed answers. Can you try capturing e.g. Screen 1 and see if that works (I don't have two monitors right here to test it)

Atli,
You're welcome! Tried capturing just Screen1 and no change (other than file size!) still won't capture anything that isn't 100% visible.

Bit of an update...I got curious so decided to try installing TimeSnapper on my laptop and it works fine there. It captures everything, transparent or not. In fact I tried it (trial) on all my other computers and it works fine.
My main computer, in which I use TimeSnapper on, as we know doesn't capture everything. I do a lot of testing, and use Virtual PC for that reason, I have several Virtual machines running various operarting systems. I also have this computer imaged and converted to Virtual PC. I decided to try the new version of TimeSnapper on the Virtual version of this computer and it works as it should on this Virtual computer which runs all the same software as the host computer. So, something on my physical computer must be interfering with TimeSnapper, at this point I don't know what, considering it works on Virtual. Any ideas?

~Wabbit

Been working on this some more and think I figured it out, well, what the cause is anyway. I got to thinking about what all my other computers and virtual PC's have in common, since TimeSnapper (trial) works properly on those, they only use one monitor, my main computer has two monitors. In windows display property settings I unticked "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." Using a single display, TimeSnapper captures everything, including transparent images! It stops again though when I re-tick the box to extend my desktop and go back to a multi display. I can duplicate this behaviour by adding a second display to other computers. Seems to be a bug with dual monitors? Could be a graphic's card issue but I've been able to duplicate this over 4 different cards so I think that not the issue *thinking outloud*
I found have the cause but no solution. Hope this is helpful!
Regards,
~Wabbit

Thanks a lot Wabbit! That was some serious testing you did :)
Can you try disabling hardware acceleration (see disable hardware acceleration) just to see if that changes anything?
Thanks Atli

Ok thanks,
I'll test this better when I get access to a dual monitor setup... but this really stinks! ![Angry [:@]](/emoticons/emotion-12.gif)
