Ability to have both an Include and Exclude Filter
Reply Quote
I may have missed this as a current ability of TimeSnapper but I really need to be able to Include and Exclude things in the filter.

For instance I want it to grab shots when I'm on google but not gmail. Also I use NotePad++ a lot and use it for development and to open .txt files where I keep my software keys and passwords (btw I also use KeePassX). So in this NotePad++ example I definately want it to include snap shots when I use it but exclude certain keywords or filenames like *key* or *login* ect...

If this can be done in the current version please let me know.

Thanks. I have looked at that page as well as setup my filter to include most of my programs. Maybe I'm missing something.

From the link and description you just sent me I can see how I can create multiple filters. But I assumed that only one filter would be in affect at a time, based on which filter is selected on the main screen. In this example the My Filter is selected and only has included programs.

I would like to have a single/active filter that allows me to include and exclude. Is that possible?

Yes, you can create an "Include filter" which *excludes* everything except what you tell it to include.

In the same manner, you can have an "Exclude filter" which by default *includes* everything except what you tell it to exclude.

Play around with it - you should be able to do what you want to achieve with this.

Both filters can have a name of an .exe file or a part of a window title.

Example:
If you want to include everything except notepad++ when you have your password file open you would create an "Exclude filter" and tell it to exclude:
*passwords.txt - Notepad++

Since this filter matches the window title of Notepad++, it will be excluded. You can have multiple criteria in each filter by entering them in separate lines.

Best regards

Thanks.  I guess my confusion is in understanding which filter is active.

Are all filters created always active or only the one selected on the main screen?

Is there a forum or doc file that has examples of more complex filter setup, like the one you just showed me?

Yes, only the filter selected in the main screen is active. But that filter can have multiple criteria that define the filter.

See the attachment for an example.

It is also possible to exclude images directly from the day browser (by right clicking and select "Add to filter")

Hope this helps! Apparently we need to make this more user friendly! :)

Cheers

Thanks again for your replies.

If I could offer a possible suggestion. How about adding a 3rd option which would allow you to specify on the first character if it is an include or exclude filter. Using a plus or minus sign to designate if it should be included or excluded. Adding a 3rd option would not interfere with previous functionality.

This is my current include filter but modified to have the full affect I would like to see in recording.

Filter Name: My Filter
[  ] Only include apps named like:
[  ] Exclude apps named like:
[x] Custom Filter (new filter type)
+BCompare.exe
+devenv.exe
+excel.exe
+firefox.exe
+iexplorer.exe
+explorer.exe
+chrome.exe
+notepad++.exe
+sqlyogent.exe
+timesnapper.exe
+trillian.exe
+qbw32.exe
+bib.exe
+*stackoverflow*
+*google*
-*password*
-*key*

So you would just parse the 1st character them place it in the appropriate state. Ideally you would want to verify each line before or show the user an error if they forgot to place a plus or minus sign as the first character. If for some very edge case you have an app name that starts with a + it would still work because it is only using the first character as the key like +++somethingnew would include any app with a name like ++somethingnew.

Also it would be great to have a system tray notification that could turned on and off in settings to help in testing the settings. A simple bubble notification that stays up for a second and disappears to let you know that the application is being recorded or not being recorded according to the filter settings.
