Track virtual machine usage like web browser usage
|

I like the way TimeSnapper now tracks websites individually.
It occurred to me that if it were to do the same thing with VMWare virtual machines, that would make TimeSnapper a foolproof time clock for me.
I do all my work in virtual machines, the host operating system has virtually nothing installed in it besides VMWare.
I have a separate VM for each client. If timesnapper could break down the usage of each individual VM during the day filling out my timesheets would become a completely effortless task.
Just to make it clear, I don't need a breakdown of the applications I'm using within the virtual machine, just the name of the virtual machine I'm running.
Regards,
Lachlan

Hi Lachlan,
(btw, nice way to separate the work!)
At this point, all I can say that I think you will be extremely happy (happier!) with the next version of TimeSnapper! ;)
We're working hard on it right now, but we've still got quite some work left.
Thanks
Atli

This would be extremely helpful for me as well. Also I do a lot of remote desktop work to manage hosting servers. Could this new feature include that as well?

Hello Atli,
I've just downloaded the latest version and I've been unable to find the new feature you were hinting at above.
Don't tell me the feature (whatever it was) didn't make the cut.
Regards,
Lachlan

Hi Lachlan,
I'm really sorry but that feature didn't make the cut and we've put it on hold indefinitely. Sorry for getting you hopes high and then crushing it.
Here is one alternative that you could use:
- Open the "Find" dialog from TimeSnapper main screen (also called activity overview)
- Type vmware.exe in the Program filter (or whatever the name of the .exe is)
- search
- Group by Date and then Caption
=> now you should see the duration of each VMware instances. Don't take the duration too seriously, but use the proportions between each instance (reason: http://forums.timesnapper.com/forums/305/ShowPost.aspx)
Not exactly what you were hoping for - but perhaps better?
Thanks
Atli
