Indifferent [:|] Viewer: Delete Image needs an Undo!
Reply Quote
Hi all!

Just had a really bad case of "Nooooooooooooooo!".... even though it turned out okay in the end. Here's what happened:

I was browsing today's recording for stuff I don't want/need to keep using the keyboard only. For some reason - without me noticing as I was focused on the actual snapshots rather than the timebar - the timebar went into selection mode (this is of course a different issue that should also be addressed!). When I had found an image that I didn't want to keep I simply pressed Ctrl-Del and Boom! TimeSnapper started purging pretty much my entire day's images. I only noticed what was going on after a few seconds because it took unusually long to delete the (supposedly) single image and then immediately killed TimeSnapper via Task Manager. The damage was done: a good six hours of images deleted.

Fortunately, a colleague had told me about a freeware undelete utility just yesterday and I immediately downloaded and ran it. It was indeed able to successfully recover all but 20 of the ~1200 lost images to another partition from where I could reimport them again into TimeSnapper using the Import Images from Older Version tool.... phew! That worked.

Nevertheless, there should be some way to undo the deletion inside TimeSnapper itself. Alternatively, how about only deleting them for good when closing the browser and until then only mark them for deletion or something like that....

Anyway, keep up the good work! ;)

Cheers,

Oliver

Hi Oliver

happy to hear it worked out for you in the end! We all know that sinking feeling Big Smile [:D]

I'm also interested in hearing more about this:

We'll see what we can do to prevent (or recover from!) accidental deletion of TimeSnapper images.

thanks

Not sure whether it's the same that happend that time but here's one way I can reproduce consistently:
  1. Click on a Note marker in the time bar (given there is one of course)
  2. Close the Note dialog (doesn't matter how - both OK and Cancel have the same effect)
  3. Press left or right cursor key -> timebar is now in selection mode
I'll watch out and let you know if I find out any other way to trigger this.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Oliver
