Making TimeSnapper Portable
|
|
|
|
|
<p>Is there perhaps a way to configure TimeSnapper Pro to read it's configuration and so on from a location within it's directory rather than the OS "Application Data" directory?</p>
<p>I want to be able to carry the application, along with logs, settings, etc. back and forth to work on my portable drive.</p>
<p>If not, is this planned for the future?</p>

Hi!
this is currently not fully supported unfortunately and we don't have a set date for this.
The biggest problem with this is actually licensing/activation/piracy and we don't have a good solution for that for USB sticks. :-|

Sorry about the markup.. the preview supports html but the actual posts don't apparently.
Well I worked out a way to do it via some extra cmd line parameters. I suppose I won't mention the details if you're worried about piracy and such.
Honestly, I don't really need the licensing information to be portable as that is a one time setting per machine. I was concerned about the application data and settings which change often.
With that in mind, do you foresee me having any technical difficulties?

That means that the application database is on each machine. Which is probably not what you want. What you want is to have the application database on the stick (as well as all the images). BTW. It is possible to control the location of the database via the /dbfolder parameter. (see this thread for some discussion on that parameter)
I expect that you will run into problems when you take the USB stick to a different computer - in which case it will ask you to validate. Then you'll have to validate the next time you take the stick to a different computer.
Feel free to post your solution here despite piracy issues :)

Right.. I am using the /dbfolder parameter currently and in demo mode it seems to work fine. So the validation is based out of the database in some way?
[...]
I also noticed there's a command line parameter that let's you specify your own firebird server.. [ /server ] Maybe that will be of use.. kinda doubt it though.

I noticed (btw, I'm the anonymous guy above). Your efforts are much appreciated. :) I didn't see any specific options during the install or any details in help. I assume it just runs completely within whatever directory it is installed in by default? You may want to add some details somewhere during installation or at least in the help files so users know it's possible to run it portable. Thanks again.

Basically, if you install it to a "removable" drive, then it runs completely from the installation directory. Else if will just use the default behavior and save the data to the %appdata% directory (as before - because with Vista - you don't want to store the snapshots below Program Files\TimeSnapper).
Thanks
Atli
ps. we are working on an updated help file which has some information about this.
