Timesnapper 'hangs' for 5-10 mins
Reply Quote
I have been seeing an odd problem with TS where it 'hangs' for quite extended periods.

The symptoms are that if you switch to the Browser or Popup window and move the cursor over the window, you get the Windows hour glass. And if you try and close the window, you get an Application is not responding message.

There also appears to be quite a lot of disc activity.

I have been killing off TS and restarting. But if you leave it for a while (guess: 5-10 mins) it eventually 'comes back'

This tends to happen 2-3 times per day.

And when you kill it off, you can see the overall process activity levels drop in Process Explorer.

So it looks as if TS is having some sort of problem with cleaing up the images data but I am really puzzled as to why this should have started only recently (say in the last month).

Any ideas?

Any thoughts on this? The other thing I have noticed is that it sometimes stops capturing whilist this is going on.

One possible cause is that I 'imported' a couple of folders that I had restored from a backup a while back (possibily about the time that this problem started). The location of these folders was different to the normal folder location.

I have deleted these folders but I wonder whether it is still trying to scan for them when doing the clean up.

Hmmm - interesting. Have just had another 'hang'. And looking in the log, it shows that it roughly co-incides with it doing an archive. And what is interesting is that the archive took 10 mins, whereas previous archives took 1s.

HI Richard

that sounds unpleasent.

How is the auto-cleanup tab in TimeSnappers option configured? And how frequently do you take screenshots?

The archiving feature works like this:
- Every hour, if the user has been inactive for 2 minutes, do the clean up.

cheers
Atli

Remove images older than: 7 days
Max allowed space: 7,000MB

You have: 13368 images
Using: 1370 MB

Image folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Local Settings\Application Data\TimeSnapper\Snapshots\

I am taking snapshots every 10s.

What is odd that these settings have been pretty well unchanged since I started using TS and I have never noticed these problems before.

I am trying to think what has changed.

The problem is I initially thought that TS was hanging and so was killing it off and restarting. It was only when I left it for a while that I realised that it had simply become unresponsive.

I have now confirmed that it is definitely the archiving that is the problem in that the last time it hung, I then checked the log (after it became responsive again) and this showed that the period of unresponsivement co-incided with an archive.

Can you not change TS so that if the user starts using the system again, it cancels the archive?

Update: is it possible that this is a problem introduced in the last upgrade. Thinking about it, these problems probably started about the time I upgraded. As indicated, my initial diagnosis was that TS had hung completely and was killing it off and restarting. It is only in the last week or so that I have realised that it is the archiving process that is causing the problem.

Thanks

Richard

Hey Richard,

can you send zip up the log file and send it to us directly? I can see where the upgrade took place and also if the archiving started to behave like that after that time. (you can also take a look and get back to us)

We could make the change you suggested, but I'd rather have the archiving process as quick as it has normally been in the past.

Thanks
Atli
