No plugins in TimeSnapper 3.5.0.5 ?
|
|
|
|
|
I let TimeSnapper auto-update itself to version 3.5.0.5 this morning and it seems there was some problem regarding plugins: The corresponding combo box under Tools|Options|Plugins is empty. Looking at the program folder all I can find is an AnimatedGifPlugin.dll with today's modification date in the TimeSnapper folder itself and another one last modified in March in the Plugins sub-folder (probably from the previous installation).
I was especially looking forward to the RSStoFlags-plugin that was mentioned in the release notes...
Any ideas what could have gone wrong there?
Cheers,
Oliver

Yes, there was a slight problem with the automatically patching this version. Also, we decided not to include the plugins by default.
If you run the setup file, which you can download from TimeSnapper.com, then you will get those plugins in the TimeSnapper\SamplePlugins\ folder. Just import those and you should get the new plugins!

Hi Oliver
Now that you've had some experience with the rss plugin - any feedback? Does it do what you expected it to and do you like it? How do you intend to use it?
My idea was basically to be able to set up e.g. a Twitter account, then you could twitter from wherever - which would in turn create flags in TimeSnapper (could create flags both on TimeSnapper home AND work).
So any Twitter client could actually be the "new" flag dialog...

Thanks for asking. I didn't have much time to do any thorough testing yet, though. I first need to find some sort of locally installable RSS aggregator as I need to add flags from multiple feeds, most(/all) of which are not public on the internet but on our intranet or even just my machine only (read: out-of-the-box support for multiple feeds would be great! ;) ). For now I have only connected TimeSnapper to our trac timeline feed so that I automatically get flags when I create or close tickets and that appears to work fine.
Generally, I'm not looking for a new way to manually enter flags. I hope to leverage this to automatically add flags for things as I do them. You might remember that I once asked for an API for adding flags. This would almost be it. It would be greater still if I could turn the RSS items into proper tasks, e.g. by defining regular expression rules for parsing out customer, project and task ID information (in case you do add multi-feed support, these rules should be per-feed). The next thing I will be looking into is creating RSS feeds from my Outlook journal items and my CVS(NT) checkins...
BTW 1: Is there a particular reason why you put both sample plugins into one DLL? I don't want the Opening Hours plugin and now I first had to figure out how to deactivate it (i.e. by setting both begin and end time to 0:00).
BTW 2: Why would I want to add flags to TS while I'm not actually working on the machine where it's running? That way there would be no activity and no screenshots associated with the flag. This is not the first time I get the feeling that I'm using flags quite differently to what you intended them to be... probably the topic of another post if I find the time...
Anyway: good start! Keep up the good work! :)
Cheers,
Oliver

We can (and kinda intended to) make the source code for the sample plugins available. Since everyone seems to have a different way of using this stuff - it might probably be best to do it yourself. The RSS plugin uses the new FlagServices that are exposed by the new TimeSnapper services/events. Sounds like you want to leverage that (see http://wiki.timesnapper.com/index.php?title=Plugin_Development)

I guess laziness... we mean to add a lot more sample plugins and it's easier not having to set up a new project each time.

Sometimes I use the flags just to keep track of what I've been doing but in other cases for exact book-keeping for timesheet purposes.
I used to work for a software development company and of course I used TimeSnapper there. However sometimes I had to go out to the customer (yeah, into the real world!) where I didn't have TimeSnapper. Taking it with me on a USB stick wasn't an option because of I was working with sensitive data (banking information). In these cases, it would have made things easy if I could have "twittered" (or post to anything RSS enabled) what I was doing and then it would automatically show up on my work computer which I use to create the timesheets.

Thanks - we intend to! And hopefully others will do some interesting stuff with the plugins model :)

Regarding sharing the source code, it might be a nice idea if we put it on codeplex.
That gives people the ability to browse it, gives us version control, a suitable license, and an audience, all for free.
(also, it works with subversion)

I have split them up on CodePlex: http://timesnapperplugins.codeplex.com/
But a better long term solution is to be able to enable/disable plugins from TimeSnapper without moving files around.
