When I'm idle it's a problem
Reply Quote

Hello,

I'm a trader, and I have some data that comes in continuosly that I view while I am working. I would like timesnapper to take screenshots so that I can at the end of my day see what this particular data was showing me at any specific time. Very useful to me at end of day analysis. But I want to run it off my laptop or another pc, than the one i'm working on primarily, because the window for the data needs to be open pretty largely, and I need all my desktop space for other stuff and yes, I have an expanded desktop.  So I'm running it off my laptop but the problem is the idle. It stops taking snapshots! There should be an option to override that, and have it disregard that I am idle, and even better than that, just in case, from a disk space point of view, specify, take snapshots from 8am till 1pm whether I'm idle or not. It's almost perfect!!!

Please make that happen, and make it happen tomorrow. Thanks.

Franco

Hi Franco,

this is possible already, see the release notes: http://www.timesnapper.com/releaseNotes.aspx

Particularily the red part:

  • Feature:

Due to users request (as always!:) two, behind the scenes, parameters can be set in TimeSnapper's configuration file (settings.ini).  They are:

    • TakeSnapshotAlsoWhenIdle (default false)
This could be useful if you have some applications that are updating throughout the day and you want to take snapshots of them also while you are away.

    • SkipSnapshotIfChecksumSame (default false)
This parameter is normally just useful in conjunction with the one above.  Since you don't want you're hard drive to fill up with redundant images you can set this parameter to True and TimeSnapper will compare the current snapshot with the one previously taken.

    • We recommend turning off screensavers if you decide to use the two settings above.

    • Right click the image in the day browser and select "Image -> Open containing folder" to open explorer with the current image selected.
  • Bugfix:
    • Resolution couldn't be set below 50%
    • System.NullReferenceException in rare occasions fixed

Hope that helps!

Best regards,

Atli

Where in the settings.ini file should you put these settings, and where should that file be?  My install didn't come with a settings.ini file so I'm not sure about the file location, or the section and format of the keys can you advise on this?  Thanks.

Hi,

the settings.ini file is located in the same folder as TimeSnapper executable.  It is created automatically the first time TimeSnapper Classic is closed.  Make sure you edit this file when TimeSnapper is not running.  You should see how it works right away. (it doesn't matter where in the file it's put since it's just key=value pairs and no sections)

It is possible to change this setting in TimeSnapper Professional from the GUI (View -> Options -> Options -> ...)

Cheers

Thanks for the quick response.  I just realized that even though I've been evaluating TimeSnapper for days, I had never actually exited the application.  So that's why I never saw the file.  Now I see what to do.

Thanks again.
